The
Soap Box Tuesday, September 28, 2004 My City Was Gone Eeek! The Department of Homeland Security has bought an entire small town in New Mexico to use as a training center for terrorist attacks. The town will be used to simulate suicide bombings, anthrax attacks and water-supply poisonings. So, what do we think "simulate" means? Can I assume that no actual anthrax will be used? No water supply will actually be poisoned? I'm sure this news story may make some feel more at ease but for me, who lives in the same state as this town, I'm a little nervous. Monday, September 27, 2004 Random Stuff School is hard but good. It sure is taking a lot out of me to go back full-time. Really, it's the time commitment that's the hardest. I can do the work. Had a stats test last week. Should get it back tomorrow. I'm not too worried. It wasn't that bad. Of course, I may be crying my eyes out tomorrow when I get that test back. We saw Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood this past weekend and DAYAM it was funny. If you get a chance to catch them, do it! You will not be sorry. It was 2.5 hours of improv with the audience and I don't think I have EVER laughed so hard in my life. Matt Groening said he is looking into making new Futuramas! Woohoo! Apparently they are not cheap to make so I guess he's looking into the financing now. I wonder how they would ever get Katey Segal back as Leela now that she's got another show. It would be very sad to get anyone else. Jay Leno announced his retirement today. He's officially retiring in 2009. Conan O'Brien has already signed a contract as his replacement! That's planning ahead. Maybe by then I'll be done with school...but probably not. Sunday, September 26, 2004 Ringing Endorsement Excuse me for being slow on some of this political news. I'm not used to being politically aware, as sad as that is, but I just found out that it appears that Al Qaeda endorses Bush for president! One Al Qaeda member is quoted as saying that because of Bush's "idiocy and religious fanaticism...We are very keen that Bush does not lose the upcoming elections." The tongue-in-cheek take on this is that Bush turns out to be the strongest recruiting tool Al Qaeda has. With Bush in office, Al Qaeda can use him as a poster child of the main reason to join the group. You know that it's when your way of life is threatened that you are willing to take up arms and goodness knows, Bush has declared war on all of Al Qaeda, spurring them to stockpile arms and younger and younger volunteers. Am I saying we should let Al Qaeda ride roughshod over the US and the world? Absolutely not! But we can't ignore our own people at the expense of hunting out these handful of people of which we don't even know where they are! We have people here, in our borders, who pay taxes, who have no healthcare or food or education. We also have people here in our borders who probably are planning the next attack. However, as long as we look for these people abroad, they have plenty of time to sit and wait for the perfect moment to sucker punch us while we are looking at the forest, not the trees. So keep it up Bush! Let the bad guys use you as a recruiting tool while you continue your war on the Iraqi people. You'll be doing someone some good while we at home are laying off more cops and firefighters. Locally, here in Albuquerque, we will continue donating backpacks full of food so that elementary students will have something to eat over weekend. Wednesday, September 22, 2004 "It's Not My Thing" Guess what movie is making its way through the troops in Iraq? None other than Fahrenheit 9/11. Apparently it's quite popular there and is spurring some soldiers to speak out against the war that they are fighting. While you can follow this link to read it on your own, I thought I'd just put a couple quotes here from the article. "There's no clear definition of why we came here," says Army Spc. Nathan Swink, of Quincy, Ill. "First they said they have WMD and nuclear weapons, then it was to get Saddam Hussein out of office, and then to rebuild Iraq. I want to fight for my nation and for my family, to protect the United States against enemies foreign and domestic, not to protect Iraqi civilians or deal with Sadr's militia." "We shouldn't be here," said one Marine infantryman bluntly. "There was no reason for invading this country in the first place. We just came here and [angered people] and killed a lot of innocent people," said the marine, who has seen regular combat in Ramadi. "I don't enjoy killing women and children, it's not my thing." I will leave you with one last quote that I think says more than it appears at first glance... "We still have full faith and confidence in our commander-in-chief. And if John Kerry is elected, he will be our commander in chief." FrickenFracken Dogs! Is it too much to ask to be able to sleep with my windows open and NOT get awakened by stupid neighborhood dogs barking at 7:30 every morning? Tuesday, September 21, 2004 The Amazing Race It was nice to see a team who played the game the way it's supposed to be played win! Chip and Karen played by the rules and totally deserved to win the million dollars. They are the only team that used the Yield and the only time that weren't name calling and back stabbing. Yes, they did lie on the last night but it was because others were wanting to gain from their work so I claim it was appropriate. It's interesting that in the end it's because they got to Calgary airport last that they got the best flight to Dallas. Anyway, I'm so glad that the Jesus couple and the hostile, broken-oxed Colin did not win. The Jesus couple had the audacity to pass another team broken down on the side of the road and then claim that God wanted them in the race. Nice role models! Colin was just downright mean and disrespectful to the countries he visited as well as his girlfriend, which REALLY pissed me off. Chip and Karen worked well together and helped others along the way, playing a fair but strategic game. Yay Chip and Karen! Are You Better Off? Take a look here and find out! Monday, September 20, 2004 Worth It? Tomorrow the original Star Wars trilogy will be released on DVD. You probably already have them on tape and are wondering, "Is it worth the money to buy them again on DVD?" Well here's a web site that will help you decide. The web site shows you frame by frame differences in the VHS tapes and the new DVDs. It's kinda cool to see the differences but you gotta wonder if Lucas just sits around all day wondering how he can keep changing his original movies. I mean, leave the things alone, George! They were made in the 70's and 80's and we all understand that. Move on to writing better scripts for the new movies! Saturday, September 18, 2004 Quote of the Day "When it comes to Iraq, it's not that I would have done just one thing differently, I would have done almost everything differently." - John Kerry, Democratic candidate for President of the US. Wednesday, September 15, 2004 Today's Debate If the frozen dinner you pull out of the freezer and eat for your evening meal happens to have only 280 calories (Amy's pasta primavera), then it's OK to supplement that with a Mounds bar, isn't it? Tuesday, September 14, 2004 Today's Debate Who in the US, besides criminals or special forces, needs an assault weapon? Seriously... Warning to Readers Never in my life have I considered myself political. I have my beliefs, of course, but I've never volunteered for a campaign, etc. Part of that is from my memories of a child having to go door to door to put flyers on people's doors, etc because my mom was often a campaign volunteer but in my memory, I did most of the work. (I know that's not true for real, but that's how it felt as a small child.) I have always voted in presidential elections since I was old enough to have that privilege but this year, that just does not seem enough. There is too much at stake this time. I think I'm going to have to start adding a few political entries here, just for my own piece of mind more than to sway readers. If I do sway a reader or two, well, that's an added bonus. So, if you REALLY don't like politics, you might want to miss a few of my upcoming entries. Consider yourself warned. Friday, September 10, 2004 The New Math The amt of $$ I make in a month as a research assistant at school = The amt Nick makes in 1.5 days. Wednesday, September 8, 2004 Fall TV Scoops WARNING: Possible Spoilers Ahead! ER: It looks like Ming Na (Dr. "Debbie" Chen) doesn't live thru the road rage shooting in last season's cliff-hanger. And you've probably heard by now that Alex Kingston's (Dr. Corday) contract was not renewed. Too bad. I got a kick out of all the action she was getting. Noah Wylie (Dr. Carter) gets a new love interest. (Good. Thandie Newton wasn't right for him...of course the person that is right for him is ME!) And of course, there will be a new med student. It's fun to watch how clumsy they are...at least that's MHO. NYPD Blue: This show is still on? Huh. Who knew? Law & Order: SVU: Lewis Black guest stars! Woohoo! That man is hysterical and severely under-rated. All I can tell you is that his character has something to do with a panty raid. I gotta make sure to catch that episode. Scrubs: Heather Graham plays a psychiatrist in 8 episodes? Yeah, that's believable. Lost: 14 people survive a plane crash on a deserted island. Entertainment Weekly calls this the best new drama. Maybe I'll have to check it out. What? The cast includes a non-English speaking Korean couple? Hmmm...maybe not. Hawaii: I want to like this show so much as Michael Biehn, of Terminator and Aliens fame, has a lead role as does they guy who played Michael Gallant on ER but it's just another cop show so far. The Apprentice: Ugh. Good time to do my homework! Will & Grace: Harry Connick Jr is back...for only the first episode, thankfully. Man, he was NOT GOOD on that show...to put it nicely. You will see J Lo again and Janet Jackson on September 23rd. Bobby Cannavale is back as Will's b/f. Yay Bobby! He was great in The Station Agent. Commando Nanny: Starring Major Dad's Gerald McRaney! No joke! See a trend here? Enterprise: This show is still on the air? Huh. Who knew? Guess who are the bad guys this season? That's right! The always reliable Nazis. (Again, no joke. ) Haven't Nazis been done to death? King of the Hill: Tom Petty joins the cast as "Lucky," a guy living off of an insurance claim after he slipped on urine in Costco and broke his back. Ewwwww! And, to make it more creepy, he starts dating Luanne! Ewwwww! Third Watch: See NYPB Blue. Thank goodness The Amazing Race and Arrested Development are back! Yay! Finally! Someone in the TV industry makes a few good calls. Yeah, yeah, I know. It's a fluke. On the flip side, NBC has given up entirely on Saturday nights. Seriously, this is the lineup: The Apprentice (from Thursday), new drama repeats then Law & Order franchise repeats. Stupid Bug I got something very flu-like although I refused to call it the flu. Feel like crap but I have this thing. I HAVE to go to classes. It's funny. I don't have to do homework but somehow going to class is crucial for me so I went to class today and I'm gonna go curl up in bed and hope that the flu meds I took kick in soon and let me sleep all night. Stupid 9am classes. Who the hell ever thought that was a good idea? I can tell you one thing, they never asked MY opinion! Monday, September 6, 2004 Just FYI...
I'm An Idiot I saw this headline and I swear I thought it said Chinese Food Leaves Dozens Dead. I was thinking, that's some NASTY Chinese food! LOL. Sunday, September 5, 2004 All Gone The Olympics have been over for a week and I have to say I'm relieved! I must have watched at least 100 hours of the games. Whenever I was home and awake, I had the games on. It was a terrible addiction. I HAD to watch! Now I feel like my life is my own again. Cold turkey is definitely the way to go in this case. Of course, it will all start all over again in 522 days when the winter Olympics open in Torino, Italy. And personally, I prefer the winter games. Maybe I'll have to take a leave of absence from school... Saturday, September 4, 2004 Question for You In this post-Columbine world we live in, could a movie like Heathers be made and released? I think not. What do you think? Wednesday, September 1, 2004 Benefits of Grad School 1) I have either no time or energy to eat. 2) I have to park clear across campus from the Psych building. 3) Because of (2) above, I am walking a lot more than I did before the semester began. Outcome: Since school started last week, I've lost 3 lbs and I got a tan (at least on my arms)! Not bad, huh?
