O. M. G.
10:46pm

You just have to read this for yourself...all I'll tell you is this...

"Experts said the wine is nutritious and contains low alcohol"

Think you know what the wine is made of? You don't. Unless you have some weird ideas of what makes a good wine.

The Jig Is Up
9:11pm

Yes, I grew up in Boston. I actually spent the first 26 years of my life living in New England. No one has ever guessed I come from there from my accent, or lack thereof. When I was growing up, my mother threatened me with bodily harm if I spoke with a Boston accent, and she was not kidding. However, today someone from school guessed I was from the east coast. How? Apparently I used the word "wicked." I don't even remember doing it so I don't remember the context but that one word gave me away. My self-image of being a Woman of the World has been shattered. I'm really just a girl from the suburbs of the predominantly Irish Catholic city on the east coast.

Pissah.

Lame Blogger
10:59am

Uh, yeah...so I've been really busy at school and it's not anything you'd find interesting so I've just been not blogging. I don't really have anything interesting to say today so to fill space, I'm gonna post a picture.

It's amazing what you can get from China these days.

Yet More Truth is Stranger Than Fiction
12:50am

A Slovak man trapped in his car under an avalanche freed himself by drinking 60 bottles of beer and urinating on the snow to melt it.

Riiiiiight. The man claims his liver and kidneys now hurt. Next time try pouring the beer on the snow and avoid the middle-man.

From Bad to Worse
8:55pm

Apparently today was a holy day for followers of the Hindu religion. While on their way to a shrine, hundreds of followers were killed. It started simple enough. 200,000 worshippers were on their way to a shrine when some zealous worshippers started pushing their way through the crowd which started crushing others in the crowd. Then all Hell broke loose:

"As dozens of people were crushed, others became angry and set fire to shops along the road, witnesses said. Fires spread along the route, causing gas cylinders used to cook food for the pilgrims to explode in the main square of the temple complex, they said. At last count, at least 215 people were dead and officials feared the death toll would grow."

Wow! It's one of those truth is stranger than fiction tragedies.

Dentist Report
9:43pm

I need one filling and one crown! Waaaaaah! Getting crowns are awful! Well, I have two weeks to stress over it. How fun. Then after the appointment, I was working at school until after 8 pm. I'm exhausted.

I thought I had to be in class tomorrow at 9am but my friend Mary, who saved my sanity tonight, told me that class is not until February 1st. I don't have to be on campus until 11 am! Woohoo!

Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous
5:14pm

Nick and I are spending the night in Santa Fe and I did a little shopping around the Plaza today while Nick worked. I saw an ad for a cowboy boot store and thought it would be really nice to have another pair. I haven't had a pair in years. I found the store and instantly knew I was out of my league. The sales woman asked if I wanted a drink. I declined but other customers, dressed in snow gear and speaking with heavy Texas accents, requested a beer which the sales woman quickly retrieved for her customers. Hmmm...never been in a shoe store that had beer on hand for the customer. I found my size and looked a cute little pair of ankle high boots and almost fainted. $1495.00! That is more than my monthly mortgage! The sales woman wanted to know how she could help, at which point I honestly whispered to her that I couldn't afford anything here, but would like to look. She said that's fine and left me alone at which point I sneaked quietly out of the store.

Now Santa Fe has always been a playground for the rich and famous. Among some of the stars that have homes in Santa Fe are Val Kilmer, Patrick Swayze, Carol Burnett and Shirley Maclaine but I don't remember it ever being so exclusive! It's kitschy, new-age-y, and artsy-fartsy but I never felt out of place here. When I lived in Santa Fe (1997-2000) there was a definite disparity between the haves and the have-nots. After today, it's obvious that the gap between the two groups is growing, not shrinking. It's sad to me because I was hoping that some day, like after I finish school, I could move back up here. If things continue the way they are going, I won't be able to afford living here and I'm not sure I'd want to.

Did You Know...
9:35pm

...that there are around 10,000 homes in the Navajo nation that don't have electricity? My friend, who's Navajo, said her grandmother just got hot water in her house a year ago!

You know the issue is that electric companies don't think they can make money on these homes. It's taking a grant from the US government to get electricity to these people.

And this in the most technologically advanced country in the world? Shame on us!

Already?
6:59pm

Today was the first day back to school. I know I had a whole month off but DAMN, it was not long enough! Now it's back to the grind and I already have homework! On Friday morning I have to present a research paper in my area of interest (whatever that is) in which I challenge the validity of the findings! Ummmm, who the hell am I to challenge anyone's findings after they've conducted an experiment that was PUBLISHED for Pete's sake? Well crap! That's not going to be easy and honestly, I'm just not up to starting homework already!

New Game - Three Things
12:55am

Here is an easy game inspired by a grocery list of Erica's. I name three things. You tell me what all three could be used for to complete one task. Then we all laugh our asses off reading each other's comments. Sorry, no prizes -- other than the healing gift of laughter -- will be awarded.

Here are this week's three items:

thimble
Maalox
a votive candle

Have fun!

Lofty Goals
11:05am

Over the next 3 days, my mission is to see a movie, finish reading a book for pleasure, and sleep tons! Ambitious indeed, but I think I can do it      ;)

Latest Obsession
1:37am

Ever hear of a musical act called Iron & Wine? I hadn't before tonight. Now I can't get enough of them...err...I mean him. Apparently it's a guy, Samuel Beam, and his 4-track. His songs are so beautiful and sound simple but contain wonderful guitar playing and such complimentary harmonies. Each song tells a short story that often is set in the South, where he grew up. You might have heard him and don't even know it as he can be found on both Garden State and In Good Company soundtracks. He's definitely worth checking into. While iTunes places him in the genre of "alternative" I feel he is much closer to a folk singer. If you go here, you can listen to a song called Naked as We Came for free! Woohoo! So go listen to him. You've got nothing to lose but 2 minutes and 32 seconds of your life.

Quote Of The Day
6:45am

Regarding the upcoming Iraqi elections...

"I would . . . really encourage people not to focus on numbers, which in themselves don't have any meaning, but to look on the outcome and to look at the government that will be the product of these elections," -Unnamed Senior White House Official.

Yeah, why focus on something as trivial as the numbers? I mean, why are they important anyway? Just because if we ONLY go by numbers, (Gore won the popular vote in 2000 after all) WE might have a legitimate government ourselves?

Odds and Ends
10:04pm

School starts up again in less than a week and I gotta tell ya, I need more time off. Hopefully the first week of classes will be lame and no homework will be assigned. My mentor (or advisor, whichever) is teaching one of my classes this semester and I asked him if there were going to be tests and his reply was, "well, not every week!" Ha! Nice sense of humor. Tests freak me out too much. I'd much rather write a paper.

MS Word is an amazing piece of shite and I don't know why it is an industry standard. Man has it got me pissed off tonight! The damn Accept or Reject Changes monster from hell can bite me!

Sorry mike and Andrew. I've researched adding an RSS feed here and it ain't happening any time soon. I'll still ping blogrolling tho so you can at least see if I've updated at a glance...if you use blogrolling.

I am so happy with my new iBook! I love the increased speed, the monitor that doesn't dim or flicker for no reason and the motherboard that doesn't overheat when I use iTunes. Man, that last one I had was truly a dog! Apple should be ashamed of themselves for allowing that crap ont he market with the Apple logo on it. They really should have done a recall. Erica, I'm sure you agree!

Speaking of the brandie new iBook, why is t that I never remember to use my USB memory stick to transfer files from one computer to the other? I think of emailing small files and even occasionally just burning a CD meanwhile I have a perfectly good 256M memory stick just gathering dust. You think I could REMEMBER a MEMORY stick. Maybe I need a RAM upgrade for my brain...

I'm wearing this t-shirt next time I go to my mom's.

Why does something always seem to break when my husband is out of town? I think the stuff waits until he's gone then laughs maniacally as I look at it like a moron thinking, "well, how am I gonna get THAT fixed?" This week it's the downstairs toilet. Luckily, we have 3 toilets in the house so it's inconvenient but not an emergency.

Bob Marley's widow is going to exhume his body and have it reburied in Ethiopia, which his widow called a "spiritual resting place." I gotta say, if I were a Jamaican, that would kind of feel like a slap in the face. Marley was born and died in Jamaica. When you think of Marley, you think of Jamaica (at least I do). But, hey, who am I to say where someone should remain buried. Just 'cause he's been buried there for 24 years, why leave him there for eternity?

Phobic Amnesia?
10:36pm

Those of you that are long time readers know I'm dental phobic. I actually avoided going to the dentist for over 10 years but then the fear of needing a root canal made me finally go about 2 years ago. When I did go, I needed a lot of work, but no root canals, thank goodness. I'm figuring it's about time to go back again, at least for a cleaning and I cannot remember my dentist's name now for the life of me! I saw the guy at least a half a dozen times and I'm drawing a complete blank. The human brain is a strange and complicated thing. I KNOW the information has GOT to be in there somewhere. I can see the office and its location in my head but I can't see the name...

My Movie List
4:57pm

After being sick for most of November and then needing to make up a crapload of school in December, I am sooo far behind in my movie watching. The following are on my MUST SEE list:

Closer
Finding Neverland
Ray
The Incredibles
The Aviator
House of Flying Daggers (opens this Friday in ABQ)

I'd also like to see Kinsey, but I might be able to live if I miss it. The problem is that some of these movies are getting old...I mean old as far as still being in the theaters. Ray is already at the dollar theater here which means it's about to go bye-bye. School starts in exactly one week...so if I see one movie a day, I could catch up! Too bad I have other work I need to do...

I'm Back Baby!
3:45pm

I now have Dreamweaver on my beautiful new iBook so I can blog whenever I want! Yay! Of course at this exact moment I have nothing to say...but rest assured I'll blog more later!

A Quick Interview With Myself
10:05pm

Jen, where have you been?
Well, from Christmas day until New Years day I was in Utah visiting the in-laws. Since I grew up in New England, it's never quite Christmas to me without snow. Unfortunately, it didn't snow while we were in Utah until we were ready to go to a party on New Year's Eve, obviously not the best time for snow since we were driving but what are you going to do. In the end, I didn't come home with many snowy memories but I came home with a cold. Since the end of the week, I've been playing with my brandie new iBook! Woohoo! I also installed an Airport Express so I can print wirelessly and man, that totally rocks! I can print stuff from my bed. As I told my husband, I'm either the cutting edge of cool or I'm now the laziest person on earth.

Why haven't you been blogging with your new iBook?
Well, I use Dreamweaver to blog and I can't find my install disk. Yes, that's pretty sad. Somewhere in this house are a bunch of my disks but damned if I can find them now when I need them.

Are you still on vacation?
Kinda. I started doing work in my lab for my mentor on Friday. I'll be working somewhat from now on until classes start on January 18.

What else is new?
I'm watching Genghis Blues which is an amazing film. Check it out if you can.

The Stupidest Spammer Ever
3:11pm

I got this spam that was so badly coded, all I saw was the code, not the actual message! If that's not bad enough, you can clearly see the programmer's email! I say that we spam the hell outta him!

In a more interesting note, you can see how these spammers make the whole thing work. I will show you below. My comments are in green:

The rest of this stuff on the bottom is all valid. It does take you to where it says it does, which is rather clever. Click on any of these links and you do get to eBay. Only one link is going to send you to the spammer's site (which, BTW, seems to be down! Hmmm...). Usually these things look so real because they are just ripping off eBay's graphics right from their site!

And now, just an FYI: if eBay ever sends you an email, they will use your first name in the salutation. So if you get something that looks like it's from eBay but opens with "Dear eBay User," it's bogus. Do NOT click on any links. You can either just delete it or forward it to spoofs@ebay.com.

And there ends your lesson for today.

In Other News of No Real Value Whatsoever...
2:13pm

I know someone who will be in the mega Tournament of Champions on Jeopardy to take place late Feb-early March! He'll be going against Ken Jennings, of course, in order to answer the burning question, could Ken Jennings beat the other past champions who were forced to leave the show after 5 wins. Personally, I don't care much if Ken is better or worse than past champions but I guess to a lot of people, this is a burning issue. However, I will be watching and I wish Brian the best of luck!

mike Makes Me Think
1:20pm

mike is a very bad man. He is making me think while I'm on vacation! Anyway, he asked me the questions below and I took a shot at answering them...

1. what will 2004 be most remembered for on a global level?
For the US bullying the world and voting a moron to a second term.

2. what will 2004 be most remembered for on a personal level?
Getting into graduate school.

3. what is your biggest hope for 2005 on a global level?
Our troops being able to leave Iraq in better condition in which they found it while not losing any more human lives...ok, that's impossible but one can dream...

4. what is your biggest hope for 2005 on a personal level?
Improved health and continued success in school (that would include finding a thesis topic ASAP).

5. which reality show would you most like to participate on?
I would love to be on The Amazing Race. It looks like a blast. I already know who I'd want as my partner but alas, I lack the stamina for such a race so I will just have to continue watching it from the well-defined butt groove in my couch.

Review of 2004
9:01pm

Bad:
Putting our old crazy cat down
Iraq
Election
3 week stomach virus
Hearing bro may have lymphoma

Good:
Getting into grad school
Being with hubby
Meeting Mary
Getting a 3.92 my first semester in grad school
Spending Christmas Eve with Mom and hub

Obviously a lot more happened but that about sums it up.

The Woman Has a Way With Words
12:21pm

The following excerpt is form Suzie summing up her 2004. It just cracks me up!

Then I spend a long time being ill, until I figure out that there was apparently much, much, MUCH celebrating after the Sox won, because I'm knocked up. We're very surprised, and after a few days of panic- very, very happy. I spend the rest of 2004 puking, The End.

Happy New Year Suzie and to everyone else out there.
