The
Soap Box Saturday, May 27, 2006 It's That Time Of Year Again It's time for me to unplug myself from my computer for a week or so. This thing is on my lap so much you'd think it was part of me, seriously. I figure it's healthy to put it away and find other things to do other than surf the web 10 hours a day. I'll be back to blogging irregularly soon enough. Take care and have a great Memorial Day Weekend! Friday, May 26, 2006 Take That You Stupid Hummer! Click on the image to see more great Dummer ads. Phrases I Hate
I'm sure there are more but I can't think of them right now. Thursday, May 25, 2006 Yet More Random Stuff You know you have good friends when at the end of the night you drive home still laughing. So, anyone remember that I had a car accident last month? Well, the police have lost the report. I've gone to the station 3 times and each time they say, "well, I can't find it. Come back in a few days." Hello? It's been over a month! Sure does not garner faith in the APD. Did anyone see House on Tuesday? Man, that was gross. Especially when that guy's testicles filled with blood and blew up. I had to watch the episode with my hand in front of my face, peeking through my fingers. What's up with VH1's Heavy Metal month? When I think Heavy Metal, VH1 does NOT come to mind. Does anyone locally know where I can buy Tend Skin? (If you don't know what it's for, don't ask...or Google it yourself.) Tuesday, May 23, 2006 Truth Really Is Stranger Than Fiction So I've turned into a MythBusters junkie. Love the show. And since I didn't used to watch it, every episode is new to me. if you've seen the show, you know what it's about. Tonight's (repeat) was about the possibility of there being a "magic bullet" that would somehow leave no evidence. (It was busted.) However, at the very end, some guy mentioned that JFK's brain was not buried with him but given to the National Archives for safe keeping. Too bad the National Archives lost it. How do you lose a brain for Pete's sake? And why wasn't it buried to begin with? How freaky is that? Sunday, May 21, 2006 In Case You Think I Don't Do Anything Fun I actually do. I just don't do it enough. Anyway, right before finals, I went to the North American's largest pow-wow called Gathering of Nations. It was very cool. Unfortunately, I was very far away from the floor so my pictures didn't turn out very well. Here's one tho:
There were literally hundreds of dancers all decked out in their finest outfits from all over the US and Canada. (In fact the new Miss Indian World is from Canada.) Behind the arena was a huge tent filled with crafts, etc. and in between there was food! OMG! Navajo tacos soooo rule. The weekend after I got a couple of free tickets to The Mystical Arts of Tibet! Hey, how can you pass up free tickets? There was a beautiful sand mandala in the lobby of Popejoy Hall that was ritually destroyed after the performance. It's always a good thing to take some time out and do something mystical, right?
So now that I've been a cultural butterfly, as it were, I'm very content with sitting in my ass for the rest of the summer. ;) Wednesday, May 17, 2006 Local Animal News It's sad but true. The bird flu could actually do something good for this state. NM is the ONLY state that allows cock fighting which really disgusts me. Watching 2 birds try to kill each other is NOT my idea of entertainment. However, if bird flu hits our shores, we may have to ban cock fighting. Damn shame! The headquarters for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association was supposed to move from Colorado Springs to Albuquerque but has decided to stay put. Thank goodness! More torturing animals for human amusement. Colorado can keep it! Albuquerque is trying to pass a law where all pets need to be spayed or neutered and it has many people up in arms. Unfortunately, it is not considered "macho" to neuter your pet. It's OK, apparently, to give away female pets and keep the male pets. They don't have babies after all. It's also OK to kill thousands of pets a year who are homeless but it's not OK to cut off your pet's balls. Go figure. Living in the wild west is always interesting. Not necessarily rational, but interesting. Tuesday, May 16, 2006 It's That Time Of Year My bod has given out. It's a combination of stress and not enough sleep. Happens every year but damn, there are so many things I want to do. They're gonna have to wait tho. It's kinda cool to have a reason to do nothing but sit on my ass. I guess I'll try to just give in to it. Sunday, May 14, 2006 What Are You Doing This Summer? How about learning a new language? I found a great site for learning some basic French phrases. Why not check it out? Friday, May 12, 2006 What Have I Gotten Myself Into? I somehow am teaching a course this July that has not existed prior to...yesterday. It's called Careers in Minority Mental Health. So there's no prior syllabus or lesson plans or anything. How insane is that? A'course I will be paid and it's not computer programming (which I thought I was going to have to do for some dough but was dreading) so what the heck. It could be fun! Other than that, I am a "health coach" at a program run by the city's heart hospital. I've never done this type of work before so it's a little intimidating too. I start in a week and a half. I gotta get going on that one. Anyone have a health related issue in their lives that they are thinking of changing? Can I practice on you? ;) Wednesday, May 10, 2006 In Case You Care This upcoming Sunday is the last ever episode of Malcolm in the Middle. I know you want me to tell you if Malcolm gets into Harvard, if Reese lands his dream job, etc. but you'll have to watch to find out. Also on Sunday is part one of a two parter Grey's Anatomy season finale. Part two is Monday night. Thursday, May 18th is the last ever episode of Will & Grace...all two hours of it. And then because they are sure you are going to love it SOOOOO much, it's on sale on DVD Tuesday, May 23rd. David Blaine almost was drowned alive last night...I mean Monday night. He was unconscious and convulsing when they pulled him out which I guess meant he could have broken the record if they hadn't pulled him out when they did.Does it count as breaking the record if you're unconscious when you do it? Good job, David. Matt Groening confirmed that 4 direct to DVD movies are being made of Futurama. Also, cnn.com reported this week that FOX has resurrected the series and will start airing new episodes in the Fall. I personally believe what Groening confirmed and am not celebrating the resurrection yet. Tuesday, May 9, 2006 Quote of the Day "What was (Keith Richards) doing riding a jet ski in a coconut tree?" - anonymous friend Monday, May 8, 2006 Getting On With It Hey! I really do have kitchen counters! Haven't seen them in a while. Haven't had a lot of time to clean. Also, the HUGE pile of laundry is about cut in half. That's the good news. The bad news is that my Mac got noticeably slower about 1 or 2 weeks ago and tonight it started overheating. Gah! It's 16 months old! And I really can't afford for it to die now. Anyone know what's going on with it? PLEASE don't tell me it's terminal. Saturday, May 6, 2006 Cooked All finals are done. All papers are done and my brain is done. I'm exhausted and just want to sleep for about a week. Unfortunately, I don't have that option. I actually still have a couple of classes to attend and Motivational Interviewing training to do. Then, of course, there are the parties. However, for all intents and purposes, I have finished year 2 of graduate school. Not only that, I think I have a 4.0 for the semester. DAMN it was a hard year. When will it get easier? To those who have recently emailed me, I will get back to you, I swear. Just not this weekend. Ugh. Wednesday, May 3, 2006 Soooooo Addicting Whoever introducted me to this game is evil...EVIL I tell ya! I can't stop playing it! Tuesday, May 2, 2006 Not That Anyone Cares The answers for the Futurama quiz are as follows:
Thanks all for not playing along. Monday, May 1, 2006 More Random Stuff Lots been going on but I fear it's not of interest except to me like I finished collecting data for my Master's. Now I just need to analyze and write it up. No problem, right? I can't believe they are remaking Revenge of the Nerds. Makes you wonder if Hollywood really is out of ideas. I also can't believe the original movie is 22 years old! How did that happen? I've never liked that there are three libraries on the UNM campus that I have to use. Couldn't they put all the psych stuff in one place? Seriously! It's a pain in the ass to find/get anything. However, today I'm actually glad there are 3 libraries since one had a fire last night...in the periodical section...the only section I ever use. I'm sure most people are more upset by the fact that the Starbucks located in that particular library will be closed until at least Wednesday. Anyway, with one of three libraries closed, at least there are two others operational. I do feel sorry (kinda) for those poor students that waited until the end of the semester to write their papers, etc. They're screwed. Has anyone else seen VH1's new show Can't get a date? I actually think it's pretty funny...at least the first one was. It was hysterical. If you're a fan of reality TV, you might want to check it out! And now, I should really start studying for my final that's on Thursday...at least I think it's on Thursday. I'm still waiting to hear from my prof as to when exac tly it is. (Long story.) Would be useful for planning the week to know a definite time/date.
