The Olympics is not all about sport! There's art too! We went to Washington Square, a free "Olympic Experience" type thing. There was food (not free), heated tents packed to the gills with people so I don't even know what was in them, and some fabulous art by Native American sculptor, Allan Houser. As Mr. Houser lived in New Mexico (as do I), I am familiar with some of his work, most notably the beautiful statues he donated to Hotel Santa Fe, the only Native American owned and operated hotel in Santa Fe. The works displayed here show the wide variety of styles of his work. We went to Washington Square at night, so these works aren't perhaps shown in the best light. For more information on Allan Houser, please visit his web site.

Ready for the Dance. Bronze.

Notice the detail at the bottom of her scarf.

The Water Carrier. Bronze.

I love this piece for its simple beauty. As I was waiting to take this picture some kids had to climb all over it and almost knock it over. Grrrr.

Spirit of the Wind. Bronze.

Spirit of the Mountains. Bronze.

What a drastic difference in style and technique from the statue above!

Morning Solitude. Bronze.

Meeting on the Trail. Bronze.

Allan Houser Haozous, 1914-1994. Bronze

This is a statue of the artist done by his son, Philip Houser, unveiled for the first time in Salt Lake for the Olympics.
